WASHINGTON(TND)—Nearly150HouseDemocratsvotedagainstabillWednesdayaimedatdeportingillegalmigrantswhoattackpoliceofficersandfirefighters.
Rep.AlexandriaOcasio-Cortez,D-N.Y.,Rep.PramilaJayapal,D-Wash.,andRep.AyannaPressley,D-Mass.,wereamongthe148DemocratswhovotedagainsttheDetainandDeportIllegalAliensWhoAssaultCopsAct.TheydidnotimmediatelyreturnTheNationalDesk’srequestforcommentThursday.
Thebill,whichultimatelypassedtheHouseina265-148vote,wouldallowtheHomelandSecuritysecretarytoissueadetainerforundocumentedimmigrantschargedwithassaultingpoliceofficers,firefightersandotherfirstresponders.Rep.JeffVanDrew,D-N.J.,introducedtheactinFebruaryfollowinganattackbymigrantsonNewYorkCitypoliceofficers.
