Democratic Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed an executive order pardoning an estimated 175,000 of marijuana-related convictions on Monday.
MooreannouncedthathewouldpardonanyoneconvictedofamarijuanapossessionchargeoradrugparaphernaliachargetiedtothepossessionoruseofmarijuanaatasigningceremonyMonday.Thegovernorstressedthatthepardonswillhelptocorrectwhathebelievestobepastharmsinflictedon“communitiesofcolor”throughthe“warondrugs,”notingthathisactionscoincidewiththeweekofJuneteenth,aholidaythathasbeenreferredtoas“blackindependenceday.”
