Remember when Democrats thought they had a winning message to combat Trump’s popularity by harping about egg prices? They just lost their favorite talking point.
“InsteadofleaningintoTrump’steardownofthefederalgovernmentorhisalliancewithbillionairelieutenantElonMusk,they’resteeringtowhattheyperceiveastheeverydayconcernsofAmericans—nonemoreimportantthangrocerypricesandeggsinparticular,”theAssociatedPressreportedearlierthismonth.
Rep.JoshRiley,D-N.Y.,whorecentlyconfrontedabirdfluoutbreakinhisupstatedistrict,saidalmosteveryconversationhehaswithconstituentscentersonrisingprices,especiallyeggs.Hemadeadirectlinkbetweenconcernsabouttheeconomyanddemocracy.
“Ifyou’reworriedaboutourdemocracy…that’smoreofareasontobeworriedaboutthepriceofeggs,”Rileysaid.“Thereasonourdemocracyisinthesituationisin,thereasonourcountryisinthesituationit’sin,isbecausefordecades,politicianshaveneglectedtheneedsofeverydayworkingpeople.”
